For sale I am offering this tribute retirement program to the greatest announcer in Chicago horse racing history, Phil Georgeff. A national celebrity , Phil was simply the best at his trade and recognized around the world for his exciting race calls and for coining the phrase, “HERE THEY COME SPINNING OUT OF THE TURN” ! Anyone and everyone who ever attended a Chicago racetrack knows his name, but more importantly, they know Phil’s voice. He was a one-of-a-kind person and Chicago fan favorite. There will never be another Phil Georgeff! Phil paved the way for future announcers like Tom Durkin, Gil Levine, Peter Galassi, Tony Salvaro and many others. He was considered a workaholic by his peers because he announced thoroughbreds during the day and harness at night. Often times fighting traffic, bad weather and traveling as much as 75-100 miles per day from one track to the other. During one Arlington meet, Phil requested a salary increase and they refused and replaced him. However, Chicago fans started to boycott and chant “We want Phil, We want Phil—much to the track managements displeasure. The chants became louder and louder so after a short stint, track management gave in to his salary increase and Phil returned to the Arlington announcers booth. This brings me to the second item in this sale and it’s a pin back button that was given away at Arlington upon Phil’s return. The button says, ‘Phil is back at Arlington”. I’m am also including in this sale a Arlington park zippo lighter. I don’t know anything about this piece or where I got it from. The lighter is brand new and never been fired. All of the items are in excellent condition. Please review the pics and determine for yourself. These are great items for any horse racing collector young and old.
